Assorted Record Reviews

Hi folks. I picked up a few new records recently and I thought I'd
pass along a few words about them. Lucky for my wallet, the release
schedule has been somewhat sparse recently. I hope this keeps up for
at least the next week or so because I'm broke! OK, on to the
review...

Guidance- "Destination/Earth" (Inspiral ISL004): Two very different
tracks on this one. "Destination" is nice darker psy trance that's
similar to the new releases on Transient and Blue Room. Very quick,
nice hard beats, sparce on the melody. "Earth" is a bright, uplifting,
"shiny" track that uses a lot of tweaking acid lines. In fact, I would
even go so far to say that this isn't really psy trance. Much more
like straight-up trance. It has a very Euro feel. I *do* like it,
though, and I'm sure it will do great when played at just the right
time. Could be a good morning track.

Enertopia- "Hi XS/The Rain People/Marakesh 2000" (Krembo KRB005): It's
not too often that I find Krembo material so I was excited to find
this. The A-side, "Hi XS" is very energetic and not as anthemic as I
expected. In fact, all three of these tracks are solid but they don't
stand out in any noticeable way. That's not to say that they aren't
great tracks because these will fit in nicely in most medium-paced
sets and they're also good listening. "Hi XS" is a bit on the minimal
side until the last few minutes when the synths start to layer and the
track suddenly comes alive. "The Rain People" has a really nice
trancey synth line, also more minimal and on the darker side. Great
layering as the track builds from a very sparce opening at around the
half-way point. "Marakesh 2000" is on the slower side with a loooong
breakdown that really kicks up a gear afterward with some nice synth
lines and spatial effects. Then it changes key and becomes darker and
a bit more intense. Sort of reminds me of X-Dream's earlier work.

Xerox- "Gravity Waves/Psychological Disorder/Energy 666/Subgenius"
(Krembo KRB006): "Gravity Waves" is dark, fast, hard, and gritty with
squelchy synth sounds and breakdowns akin to Chakra/Edi Mis.
"Psychological Disorder" has some very nicely orchestrated synth
sounds. It's eveident that lot of attention was given to detail in
these tracks--the composition is smooth and arrangement is almost
symphonic with variuos movements. "Energy 666" is slower and features
a sample from Oliver Stone's _Natural Born Killers_.

On a 1-10 scale, I'd rate the Inspiral an 8, the Enertopia an 8, and
the Xerox a 6.

Bom!

here's a couple of things i've picked up lately:

sphere - fluxations ep (primate) vince watson here with a varied 3-tracker.
one track is straight up hard techno with a chunky bassline and some builds,
and the second track uses the same bassline sound but layers it with some
vox chords which provide an excellent breakdown. my pick is the 3rd track
which is the best techno-trance tune i've bought so far this year. it's
incredibly hypnotic, with a bubbling bassline, solid beats, and synth swirls
over the top. it's not the easiest track to mix, but hey...if you wanna
play trance, you gotta deal with those kinds of tracks all the time. (9/10)

landlord - +1/-1 (bellboy) from the scottish bellboy label comes this
2-tracker of drummy techno. although one side (-1) is purely percussive,
the flip keeps the driving beats and techno-y clangs and adds some cool
string chords over the top. the break in this track is excellent... can't
wait to hear it on a large system... (8/10)

mould impression - last impression ep (reload) adam beyer produced this
very reload-styled ep of techno. it's got enough hypnotic moments on it
to warrant a review here though. the two inside tracks are my picks, one of
which is a tribally driving drum track. it's perfect for getting in and out
of melodic tracks without melodies clashing and without losing energy. the
other inside track has those same infectious hard beats that beyer knows how
to create so well, and adds some smooth basic channel-style synths in the
middle for an cooled-down effect. (8/10)

orca - (state of mind) duran and penton (of resonance records fame)
produced this one... three tracks of decent acid trance. the side with two
tracks has an incredibly deep kick-drum, lots of acid lines and melodic
stringy breakdowns. nice, but pretty standard. the side with one track
uses arpeggiated synths and a more abrasive synth sound, which ends up as
the only element in the break and makes for a very chunky feel which works
well. (6/10)

btw the store i shop at finally got in some 'stay up forever' records in,
one of which i found to be one of the most slamming acid trance tracks i
have heard since ...i dunno... thai 001. if anyone has any recommendations
on this label, i'd like to hear them.
also anyone hear noom 28? i just saw it although i didnt get a chance to
listen to it...
there was also a record on the 'cluster' label which i'm not familiar
with... anyone got any info?
and finally, i listened to the latest global ambition record, and was
totally unimpressed. most of the trance/techno has been sucked out of this
label, imho, leaving sorta soggy hard house behind :/ were there any
standout releases in the red/orange, green/lime, or peach/grey sleeves?

i went to the record store today and waited patiently for three hours for the
goa package to arrive from hunab-ku. and i walked out with some new stuff
that i only briefly listened to on the shop headphones, hoping that i would
take it home and it would be just incredible. this usually does not happen
but today it did.

Return To The Source - Sacred Sites LP
i know we've all heard enough about this one already but i just love the
dance trax. stylish and conceptual, they are brilliant tunes. my favorite is
laughing buddha's tapu. next to that - anubis - rites of ra - very
psychedelic. i can definetely hear the posford influence. insectoid's
tribadelic nomads is great also for obtaining a definite mood - this track is
what i would call "conceptual trance" maintaining a consistent theme from
start to finish. and the bass guitar in joujouka's "ama no kawa" is so
stylish.

Human Blue EP - Spiral Trax SPIT003
	A side - Stonehenge (150)
Spacey intro develops into a solid 4/4 kick. Good bassline providing a
stable hypnotic energy. The track subtly progresses to a melody line that
almost sounds hidden behind the low bass and kick. This I found nice because
it doesn't distract from the present mood. There are no tweaking synths or
harsh grating noises and the song flows forth without interrupting focus.
Intermittent high-hats throughout, dropping out and then coming back in, give
rise to higher energy levels and there are good solid snare accents on the
upbeats. Only fault - the (understated) short outro. But I really like it and
highly recommend it.
	B side - Psykotix (149)
Similar style to a side with 4/4 kick and minimal intro. Excellent for
beatmixing in and out. 303-type acid line comes in building energy but not
overwhelming the listener. Good melody line persists over the trancy
unfluctuating bass and beat underneath. Overall a good release from our
swedish trancers.

Synchro EP - TIP024
	A side - Kitchen Sync (150)
I remember in May when TIP threw their party here in Los Angeles Andre
(their A&R frontman) played some killer killer trax off of DAT. Of course
this means at the time they were likely unreleased. I think here's a couple
of them. A somewhat melodic intro erupts intro craziness involving lots of
airplane whooshes and the like. Through the track the melody comes and goes -
making its presence known here and there to remind you that this is still
that same great song. The general vibe of the song is driving and rolling,
but never noisy or harsh. Synchro aptly titles himself as his rhythm
construction is quite well syncopated over standard 4/4 beats involving
expressive use of high-hats and accentuative marks. The musicianship on this
one is top quality and deserves a gold medal. The result - another TIPNOTIC
(i love it!) tune to move your feet and your spirit.
	B side - Power On (149)
While the a-side is quite well done and deserves praise, I feel that this
cut is the winner. Again, superb syncopation within 4/4 time signature
creating a rolling funky danceable excursion. The vocal sample is good to
boot. What I like most about this cut and the a-side is that they never get
noisy. There is no harshness or grating - something I seem to hear more of
from other (flyingrhinomatsuri) labels of late. About midway through there is
a nice break and the beat drops back in resuming the concept once again.
Energy rebuilds and prepares us for another break from which the beat again
drops in nicely and rolls on to the finish. The minimal outro is perfectly
designed for smooth beatmixing - something I particularly favor. As the
sample is heard again at the end it is repeated, looped and distorted which
makes a quite nice effect. What a winner EP. Check this one out for sure.

Growling Mad Synchro EP - TIP023
	A side : Velociraptor (150)
150 seems to be the magick number recently. It seems to be the perfect speed
- not too fast not dragging. Anyways that's besides the point. What we have
here is a collaboration between Riktam, Bansi, and Jeroen who is Synchro. The
combined efforts and musical styles are well presented in this track. What we
have here is a track with good bass, syncopated hi-hats, and general
psychedelia throughout. It's a good ride - still not harsh as the dam
growwlers can be sometimes. It all balances out quite well and what we get is
a funky rollin voyage that gets the job done - and does it well. I give it
high marks.
B side : Bandicoot on the Run (150)
There is more going on in this cut. More sounds osciallting - a 303-style
acid line. The production is good but doesn't have quite the driving positive
effect of the a-side. I find the title to be quite well conceived as it seems
as though someone is running from something. Midway the beat turns 12/8 and
changes the entire energy. This is a good transition and it doesn't stand you
still leaving you to wonder how to get back into the groove. Gradually it
transitions back to the 4/4 and drives on to the end. Could possibly be your
cup of tea but I think the a-side of the record will be seeing more sunlight
(or blacklight for that matter).

Funkopath EP - 21-3 (T03005)
	A side : Skweel (148)
HOT HOT HOT! Totally insane track full of bouyancy and energy and funked-out
breaks as well. I love the whole 21-3 trip extending the limits of the trance
as we have been familiar with it. The intro had somewhat of an Alien
Pets-esque kick drum and style then it just erupts. The sharp snare is also
notable and defines the energy making this a tight fun track throughout.
	B side : Skwirm (141)
I was already loving this one from the compilation. This version is a little
different - clearer and sharper, but again the combination of breaks and
trance elements proves sublime. This EP will move the entire floor and get
everyone high.

Some news on further TIP releases :
TIP025 - Snake Thing EP - Nick Taylor full on breaks and high-energy.
TIP026 - Psychopod EP
TIPLP15 - Infinite Excursions 2 (September 97)
TIPLP16 - Psychopod LP.

Take care and bom to all,
Jason

Opinion : A very diverse collection of deep tracks

1. Space sage - Tristan
2. Pol zirkular - Factor

9. Slipstream dub - Medicine drum
10. Adios amoeba - Pan

============================================================================

I'm not going to list the others cause ya probably all know
the tracks on it already, but ask if ya wanna know. The Retrodelica
is a ablessing 'cause it has some tracks i only had on CD, and i
really love, especially Over Bloody Flood from Blue Planet Corporation
drives me mad. That track is definetly on my top-10

The Phantasm collection is not indeed all candy, like someone commented
but a few tracks are so good it's worth buying. I listened to transient
5, good... but not good enough... especially since i already had 12
records
in my hands. If you can get your hands on cabb-04 do it !, major
head-fuck.

The new transient 12" is great, but STUPID me didn't buy it 'cause one
of the tracks was on Transient 5, which i thought i bought. A well

maybe the next salary :)

Subject: [GOA] IN FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT review from Flying Rhino

Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 23:25:46 -0400 (EDT)

Well I have just tasted the new In Flight Entertainment made by Flying
Rhino which is the sequel to First Flight released last summer. First
the bad news:
This compilation is planned to be released on June 30th 1997.
The good news:
Its much better than last years First Flight from Flying Rhino. Overall
First Flight was a great compilation, however due to the lack of tracks
as well as the weakness present within a couple of the tracks, I thought
that the album had the majority of momentum because of the company that
released it, as well as by the incredible cover. Please dont get me
wrong, it was great and all, but it was not as strong as the hype made it
to be. This new compilation though is much better. It is made of 10
tracks and it carries a rather good punch with the use of both melodic
and acidy trance styles. I was really impressed with the album and
strongly recommend it to those in pursuit of compilations. Some of the
killer tracks include Blue Planet Corporation "Cyclothimic", Slinky
Wizard "The Wizard" remixed by Kox Box, and Tarshan "Beyond
Transformation". All the tracks are truly wonderful but those were the
essential herbs and spices that made the album a killer for me. So when
it comes out, take my word and check it out.
Here is the track listing which in accordance to Flying Rhino is all
unreleased material:
1. Manipulators "Biological Manupulation"
2. Tristan & Process "Dealing with Demons"
3. Blue Planet Corporation "Cyclothimic"
4. Slinky Wizard "The Wizard by kox box"
5. Stripper "Not Now I've Got a Planet to Catch"
6. Psychaos "Dense Dawn" this is by Joti Sidhu!!
7. Syb Unity Nettwerk "Morphogensis"
8. Darshan "Tranceformation"
9. Process "Beyond the Internal Horizon"
10. Slinky Wizard "James Bond Theme: A License To Kill" rather
interesting and unique, I liked it...

Overall a stronger compilation than First Flight which has a lot more
tracks and is more diverse. I do recommend it.

I just picked up a few things at the shop yesterday. I thought I'd
give you all my thoughts on what I did and didn't buy.

Things I put in my bag:

1)Germinating Seeds of Doda- Auracle 002 Break-beaty a-side,
conventional 4/4 b-side. After a few listens, the a-side seems to
stand apart as the great track here. It's much more interesting to
listen to and seems more energetic.

2)Tim Shuldt- Animatronic EP (Matsuri MP026)- I really like this
ep...both sides are hard and dark. It's a very intense ep with not
much melody. It's brooding and dark and I really like it. One
drawback, though...the production seems to be lacking. The recording
sounds a little empty--the bass isn't as deep and punchy as it could
be. I'd bet that this is due to the mastering/pressing.

3)Deviant Electronics- Brainwashing Is Child's Play (Helix HEXLP 002)-
Deviant Electronics are astounding. Fast, energetic, driving trance.
It's hard but not angry. It's not as melodic as what you'd get from
Koyote and it's not as manic as what you'd get from
PsyHarmonics...it's a nice middle point between these two.

Things I left on the shelf:

1)Nervasystem EP (Matsuri MP027)- I don't know quite what the plan
was with these two tracks... They don't really seem to go anywhere
and the a-side sounded rather vacuous. I'm not really going to say
much more about this. I'd like to hear some other opinions on this.

2)Psyko Disko LP (Flying Rhino)- A re-issue of the Psy Harmonics
release from about 6 months back. I didn't buy it then and I still
don't think it's worth it. It's 5 tracks, one of which (Pho Rue Yang)
I already have. This stuff is just a little to intense and insane
even for me. One thing I might add, though...I think the pressing is
better this time around.

3)Lords Of Chaos (Transient)- Oy. Here's another single that just
didn't take me anywhere. Two minimal tracks and nothing interesting
as far as I was concerned. It got boring quick. Between this and the
Matsuri Nervasystem, I'd be tempted to say that this genre is going
more in the minimal techno direction. I hope I'm wrong in this assumtion.

I'd really like to hear what others have to say about the Nervasystem
and Lords of Chaos. Maybe if I bought these and took them home and
played them loud I'd change my mind (it's definitely happened before)
but I just didn't have the ca$h to experiment yesterday.

That's about it from here. I'm still anxiously awaiting the new
Flying Rhino Comp and the Growling Mad Scientists album. Hopefully
I'll get them soon and do another review. :)

Bom!

Hey all, it's been a while since I have posted anything, but yesterday I
went on a shoping spree, and I thought that I would share some reviews. As
a producer of trance myself, I'm picky about what records to buy, and
lately goa hasn't been "doing" it for me. I like the more melodic (nice
pads, strings etc) trance and you'll see that in my picks.

First of all, I picked up the 21-3 Compilation. 3 records of "Unique
Diversions and Breaktrance excursions" <- Quoted from the cover. I'm
telling ya, that's exactly what it is. Some artists and remixes on this
compilation include Eat Static, Manmademan, Deviant Electronics and
medicine drum. While alot of this trance is straight forward 4/4, there
are a lot of breaks, which is suggested in the title. All tracks are very
spacey and melodic and you never know what will happen, in the middle of
the track, you have this massive build, into breaks which blow your mind.
Ten tracks in total make this compilation well worth the money. Oh yeah,
it's distributed by Flying Rhino.

Second, being the Platipus fan I am, I bought Poltergeist - Vicious Circles
(The Remixes). This is simply a killer track with two hard mixes by Union
Jack and Carl Cox. This is an earlier Platipus track, but I love it and it
has a nice hard yet melodic feel to it. All I have to say is that Simon
and Claudio are wicked.

Continuing with Platipus, I bought the new (Over here new *grin*) Terra
Ferma Album entitled Turtle Crossing. If you've ever heard Terra Ferma,
you know what I mean when I say *WOW*. It's so melodic and some of the
weirdest chord progressions I've ever heard in trance music. Nine tracks
which include Lunar Sunrise, The Sceam and Floating. Anyone know what
kinda gear he uses? His sound is consistent and I'm interested in finding
out what kinda gear makes those nice melodic lines and chords. One last
thing about this guy.. He's a God.

A friend really likes Electrical Mistress and Spinal Grip on Transient's
Lords of Chaos release. On the other hand I find it very repetitive and
boring. It seems that alot of these release are sounding so similar these
days, that it's almost hard to distinguish between one and another. Just
my two cents and I'm sure I'll get flamed for that.

The last one I'll review is "The Age of Love - The Remixes" on React.
Again with my tastes in mind, you can probabbly tell why I picked this one
up. I'm not sure, I think this song is more commercial, although I don't
listen to the radio over here, cuz It sucks for the most part, but I liked
the nice background pads and harmony. There is a Paul Van Dyke mix which
in my opinion is the better of the two. It has a hard beat to it, with
nice background noises and some weird chants. On the flip side, there is a
Jam and Spoon Mix. Typical Jam and Spoon track with spacey sounds and a
wierd bass drum. It's really soft and not really flowing. It's like it
goes from a Jam and Spoon track, into The Age Of Love for the good part,
then a build up back to the jam and spoon minimal part. Man those guys
seriously need some new gear. I have their old album, and it's the same
sounds. I think they are due out with a new album soon, I'm wondering it
that is any better?

Anyways, now that you're totally bored, I'll stop. If you are interested
more detail on these email me at dwarning@sentex.net and I'll be happy to
give you any info you want .. track listings etc..

Regards,

	Mike

Subject: [GOA] records new to me.......
Date: Sun, 20 Jul 1997 22:50:20 -0500

ok, time to do my part and throw down some reviews....i recently did
some record shopping and here's what i picked up.

Blue Room 033
Total Eclipse...collapsar/direct motion
one of the best eps i have bought in a while, i really love this
record....collapsar is a moderatly fast space journey into a deep
trance.....just a touch dark with some delicious sounds, but everything
works together very smoothly. Excellent melodies+phrasing Direct motion
is more dubby, reminded me of untitled from Made on Earth.....kind of
defines chilled out ambient goa. 9.5/10

21-3 003
The F.O.G. ep.....
Tristan+Orange Peel....citris
Tristan ....sensory deception
i guess you could call this stuff breakbeat goa.....interesting, glad i
have it because i don't have anything like it.....citris felt like one
long uninteresting buildup to a break that uses hiphop phat beats, then
in a whoosh the track gallops off into a good experience from there to
the end. sensory deception didn't do anything for me, but i saw a
review of it that said it was good for mixing. 6/10

Koyote
Encens....shapeshifter/howl
two great tracks......i love the howl in "howl", it enters when you
don't expect it, pretty darn scary! shapeshifter has a great almost
funky beat that goes um-wop, um-wop, um-wop.........takes it time
getting estalblished, deliberate and not rushed. something that could
be the crossover in a set into a higher energy level. 8/10

Matsuri mp27
Nervasystem....stardust/matter transfer
i love stardust, it's got a funky beat with squlching modulated sounds
that are thrown back and forth from left to right. A tight track, full
of energy, only drawback was an outof place sample, which i can't make
out the last word.....dosn't work at all. Matter transfer was alright,
felt like an attempt to meld those squelching noises into a morning
track....only works partially. 7.5/10

Flying Rhino
Air Born
Wow! the only thing wrong at all w/ this compilation is the vinyl is
missing three tracks that are on the cd! The darshan track is the
highlight for me, everything else was incredible as well. "Biological
Manipulaton" takes a while to get going, but once it does, it's
unstoppable! Slinky Wizard never dissapoint, the stripper track gave me
a big grin......good stuff from my favorite label 9.5/10

TIP 014
Infinite Excursions Sampler
wonderful ambient atmospherics, four tracks that i guess are off the
cd. I couldn't figure out what speed to play the Overlords track at, but
i like it at 45 The Anesthasia track is a harder than the three
others. I keep wondering if mellow tracks like this could work on a
dance floor, or should be condemmed to chill rooms.....hmmm......8/10

Polytox 007
HiscoreXor (I think)......true freedom/drone VII
I have no idea how old this is, but it reminds me of earlier goa,
typical full-on speed and progressions of acid lines. true freedom has
a GREAT ending, i would love to end a set with those sounds. Drone VII
struck me as minimal goa......good stuff all around
Both tracks sound very alike though......8/10

hey, if you made it this far, congrats!

Matthew wrote onto topic "[GOA] SPIRITZONE Vol 3":

I just got the CD set a few days ago, and I like it. The set is
similar built up to #2 out of their sampler series, CD 1 holding
highly dancable stuff, CD 2 being more relaxed and chilling. So far I
do like the 2nd CD more, but I have to listen to CD 1 more often I
think (spent the weekend listening to the "Bible of Dreams" from Juno
Reactor, hehe). Quite a few tracks are taken from other Spirit Zone
albums. If you don't have them and want to get an impression of those
albums this CD set is really good.

Here's a tracklisting

(CD1)

 1. Electric Universe "Alien Encounter part 2"
    (from the Stardiver album)

 2. Ololiuqui "Voltage"
    (from the Dito album)

 3. S.U.N. Project "The Norb"
    (from the Drosophila album)

 4. Shiva Chandra "Chandra"
    (from the Spicy Moments album)

 5. Space Tribe "Cicadas on DMT"
(from the Ultrasonic Heartbeat 12" B-Side)

 6. Star Sounds Orchestra "Alien Intelligent Service"
    (from the Psy Force album)

 7. Nada Karma "Out of Liquid"

 8. Psy Phy 6 "Gecko Echo"

 9. Alphanaut "Abduction (Acid 303 Mix)"
    (from the Alphanaut album) :)

10. Shiva Shidapu "Power of Celtic"

Concerning your track I'd like to say that I rrrrreally love that fat
analogue twisting bassline and that 303 riff after 3 mins or so...

(CD2)

 1. Ololiuqui "Ologarden"
    (from Dito)

 2. Patchwork "Prefade"
    (from the Patchwork album)

Hello there...

A few brief reviews (not too new records, I know..) :
These are records I like to play at home, so they're all recommended

Crop Circles "Full Mental Jackpot" - Auracle Records

This EP is so good I can hardly contain myself! ;) Etnica in yet another
guise, are still spinning at home, and both sides are full on melodic
psychedelia. It's really "Full Mental Jackpot" like they claim..
Rumours are the Auracle EP 003 is equally good (another Crop Circles
release), so look out for it!

Athena "Woodwalking / U are alone" - Peyote Records

Miranda under her alias Athena presents another stunning melodic
release, this one is below standard tempo, but has the most beautiful
melodies. Woodwalking is around 120 or so BPM, while U are alone
is even slower and more abstract. The best release on Peyote
(Koyote's sublabel) so far!

V/A "3D" - TIP Records

This LP does it for me, IMHO it's not flat and not a stunner, but there
are quite a few good tracks on this one. Process, GMS, TIP and
Sandman are good examples, and this LP grows on me each time
I listen to it. Not the most melodic stuff, but definitely psychedelic
enough !

Shakta "Cosmic Trigger" - Dragonfly Records

An expensive release as the B side is featured on the already released
album ... :/ Still the Cosmic Trigger track is so good I had to get this
one.. Some may complain Shakta is not exciting enough on the
rythm side etc, but listen to the melodies! One of his best tracks so far
IMHO..
