Trance Central 4 - A Trip To Goa
(Kickin')
RRP$40
I was in the pizza shop last night and this guy starts talking to me - "man have you heard that new trance sound - Boa?" "Boa? Naah, you mean Goa - named after the former Portuguese colony, now returned to India, right?". Psychedelic trance, Goa trance, the sound is finally becoming big throughout Europe and England, and this compilation, expertly mixed by Prana's Tsuyoshi Suzuki is testament to its sudden rise to prominence. Of course, we've heard this stuff for years at parties thrown by the Vibe Tribe, and numerous crews "up North" in Byron and Bellingen, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes for a backlash to form.
For your money you get sixteen tracks totalling about 2 hours of some pretty tasty tracks from Prana, Pollinator, Etnica, Bass Chakra, Doof, Green Nuns and more, and the choice to go for a mixed CD is, in this instance, a wise one. Suzuki manages to weave the tracks together in a manner not unlike our own Michael MD, slowly building each track to a peak before upping the ante with the next. Not at all bad for a style I am finding increasingly tedious and ridden with New Age philosophies, and if you actually like Goa trance then this should be high on list of "must listen"s.

Rauschen 11 (with free Rauschen 10)
(Force Inc)
RRP$32.95 (for 3 CDs)
A rather good special offer here - buy Rauschen 11 and get the double CD of Rauschen 10 for free . . . . and Rauschen 11 is a fine CD in its own right.
Bringing together the last three months of Force Inc releases, Rauschen 11 traces the metamorphosis of Force Inc with the beats slowing down further and the tracks being divided between acid house in the Plus 8/Definitive Records-style, and some trip-hop sounding ones. Ian Pooley is in fine form with the extra funky Chord Memory and Two Space Cowboys On A Bad Trip, Kerosene's This Is My Bitch and Subsonic 808's Funky & Down remind me of Phil Smart-style 303-tinged house. Then you also get Mike Inc, Richard Benson, Ultrahigh, and a crazy track from Khan called Gangsta J.C. which loops Janet Jackson and changes her into a squelching 303. At this low price, and in this special mega-offer, get this whilst you can . . .
1. DJ Rush Electric Indigo 2. Ian Pooley Chord Memory 3. Love Inc How Deep Is Your Love 4. Richard Benson Rich In Paradise 5. Bizz O.D. Stomp 6. Gene Farris On Fire 7. Techno Nations 5
(Kickin) $40rrp
A double CD in what has so far been a good series of solid, minimalist, Detroit-style techno. Twenty tracks on this make it worth getting especially if you like the stuff Juice has been putting out. Some old tracks (esp Steve Poindexter's Work That Mutha) mix it with the new, with labels like Peacefrog, Cheap, Synewave, Tresor and Reload getting amongst the action. Definitely no trancey bits, just weird acid and percussion lines for a full analogue feel which makes it quite funky at times but also quite hard going if you expect an uplifting melodic synth wash every now and again (and we know we all like 'em - yes even me). For Sydney-siders the best comparison is that this is a collection of some of the highlights of the music BizE DJs.
Tracks are - with notable artists in brackets
1. Kosmic Messenger - Flash (Stacey Pullen) 2. Lazer - PM1 (Patrick Pulsinger) 3. Ides - Plastered (Ian Pooley) 4. Steve Poindexter - Work That Mutha 5. DJ Hell - Totmacher 6. Memory Tree - Dual 7. Plantastik - Land Of Zod 8. Regis - SPeak To me 9. DJ Skull - Circuit Breaker 10. Norman - The Piper (NOT the same as DJ Tom & Norman) 11. Funk D'Void - Jack Me Off 12. Cheap Knob Gags (!!!) - Does He Rent It Out? 13. Tobais Schmidt - Take Thatt (w/ Neil Landstrumm) 14. Rotortype - Emulator (Cari Lekebusch) 15. Neil Landstrumm - Swing/Jerk 16. Joey Beltram - Setups 17. Drone - Morphist 18. Spira - Scorpion 19. Sixth Sense Approach - Scary Dog 20. Woody McBride - Electris

Brain Ticket 2
(SPV) rrp $40
Another double CD compilation hits my desk complete with dodgy computer graphics cover which SPV seem to have made a habit of doing. But, this having been said, its a good trance compilation which most Ausravers I know would wet themselves over.
CD One is all deep trancey acid with lots of digital effects for that extra spacey Goa feel whilst CD Two is slightly more funky and at one moment housey. Listening to it, it reminded me of the Trancemaster series without the seemingly increasing umber of dodgy tracks that seem to have taken over that series. Kickin's Trance Central series is more commercial sounding than this so that places this firmly left of centre which is allways a good thing. AND, what is more, this has been on hi-rotation on my CDRom drive which means its a good accompaniment to uni work . . . . (hip hop and even trip hop has too many 'cues' in it for my mind to become one with the keyboard properly).
Tracks are -
1. Magoo Project - Lowgo 2. Synaesthesia - Synaesthesia (Hallucinogen rmx) 3. LSG - Sweet Reply (Oliver Lieb) 4. Shap - Channel Feedback 5. Scann Carriers - Refunktion (Mark Finnie rmx) 6.
